5 Tips for Beginners
Seen some fancy design work on the Internet and you want to get in on it? Well, you can. If you have been drawing or doodling long before Illustrator even existed, considering a career in design may be the right choice.
Here are 5 handy tips for you to check out and perfect your design skills.
1. Get inspired by collecting your favourite designs
I’m sure you have seen some pieces of art that you like. You can begin collecting them by visiting websites such as Behance, Pinterest and Deviant Art. The purpose of this exercise is to help determine your style. By creating a catalogue of designs from influencers will inspire your future designs. Feel free to collect as much as you want and take your time doing it. In no time, you will be able to create your unique style and design.
2. Recreate the pieces that you like
By all means, this does not mean you copy someone’s work and call it your own. Recreating the work (without passing it off as your own, of course!) gives you the chance to learn and even re-design something. The goal of this exercise is not to duplicate it, but to find different ways to do it. Don’t get upset if it does not turn out exactly like the original.
3. Practice
This, without a doubt is one of the most important steps for a beginner. From drawing on a sketch pad to eventually trying out software, practising your skills will get make you a better artist in no time. If you’re still on the fence about purchasing Adobe Illustrator, there are a few web-based interfaces and various free software available. You are only one Google search away!
4. Sign up for an online course
There are multiple platforms for you to learn from. You can choose from free or paid courses. You can start off with basic free courses and once you are confident to move on to the next level, you can proceed to more advanced, paid courses.
5. Seek feedback
Community is what makes things work. By joining a Facebook group or Behance forums, you get to chat with designers and hopefully get some feedback on your work. Remember, everyone views art differently, so you might get some people who don’t understand your direction or even like it. Don’t be disheartened. Learn to take criticism in a constructive way to improve your skills!
